The Chinese military going global brings security and opportunities rather than threats and challenges to the world, spokesperson with China's Ministry of National Defense Wu Qian said on Wednesday.

He made the remarks at a press conference when answered a question from CGTN reporter Han Bin about whether protecting China's overseas interests and its path of peaceful development is contradictory.

Wu said there is "no contradiction at all," stressing that China will pursue a defensive national defense policy and never seek hegemony, expansion or spheres of influence.

Wu pointed out that the Chinese military is actively involved in peacekeeping operations, escort missions, humanitarian and disaster relief missions.

For the Chinese military to go global, it is for the purpose of upholding Chinese overseas interests and to better implement the responsibility of Chinese military in the new era, he said. Wu added that it also echoes the aspiration of the international community and will help offer better and more international public goods.

"The Chinese society is a socialist one, it follows the peaceful road of development, foreign policy of peace. It also stresses the need for valuing peace as part of its culture," he said, reiterating "This shows that China will adhere and continue to follow the national defense policy."
