Forbes on Monday released its latest rankings for the 50 most valuable sports teams and, like the past three years, the NFL's Dallas Cowboys topped the list with an estimated value of five billion U.S. dollars.

The last time the Cowboys made the NFC Championship was 23 years ago in 1996 – only two teams, the Washington Redskins and the Detroit Lions have longer conference championship droughts.

However, that did not stop the Cowboys from generating profits for its owner Jerry Jones. According to Forbes, nine of the 50 highest-rated sports TV broadcasts in 2018 were regular season games of the Cowboys. Sponsorship plus premium-seating revenue brought in about 340 million U.S. dollars.

Baseball's New York Yankees ranked second on the list with 4.6 billion, followed by La Liga's Real Madrid, which became the most valuable soccer club with 4.24 billion U.S. dollars. Real Madrid's sworn enemy, Barcelona, trailed by 0.22 billion at No. 4.

The New York Knicks again are the most valuable team in the NBA with four billion U.S. dollars, despite having been one of the league's biggest disappointments.

The top 50 list was again shared by football, baseball, soccer and basketball teams. The highest ice hockey team was the NHL's New York Rangers which ranked No. 72 with an estimated value of 1.55 billion dollars.

The 2019 list, for the first time, saw all 50 teams enjoy a total value of over two billion U.S. dollars. NFL teams made up more than half of the list with 26 teams. The MLB had nine, European soccer leagues got eight and the NBA had seven.

Twenty-seven of the 50 teams made over 100 million U.S. dollars and 13 of them came from football. Barcelona became the only team that lost money (37 million) last season.
