Atletico Madrid ran riot at the International Champions Cup by overpowering city rivals Real Madrid 7-3 on Friday in the first-ever Madrid derby on American soil. Diego Costa inspired his side to victory with four goals although he was sent off in the 65th minute for a confrontation with Real's Dani Carvajal.
The Red and White stormed out of the blocks with Costa opening the scoring inside 43 seconds thanks to a deflection from Sergio Ramos. Record summer signing Joao Felix doubled the lead by scoring from Saul's cross seven minutes later.
Angel Correa, who replaced the injured Morata, made it 3-0 by the 19th minute. Madrid looked to reduce the deficit with a cross into the area for Jović, but the Serbian striker clashed with Oblak and had to leave the pitch. The game was not even half an hour old when Costa found the net once again, completing his hat-trick via the penalty spot to expand it to 4-0 for Atletico
In the closing stages of the first half, Vinicius Jr. had Real’s clearest opportunity but his effort came back off the post. Costa made it 5-0 from the spot before half-time.

Zidane brought on Keylor Navas, Carvajal and Lucas Vázquez after the break, yet it seemed that it just wasn't Madrid's day, and Costa netted his fourth six minutes into the second half. Atletico led 6-0 by the 51st minute. While a Hazard cross saw Nacho notching Los Blancos' first goal on the 60 minute mark. Shortly after, both Costa and Carvajal were sent off, as tempers boiled over.
There were a further three goals to come with both teams down to 10. Real's Karim Benzema scored a penalty after Atleti's Vitolo bagged their seventh and Javi Hernández added one more for Real, making it 7-3 at the final whistle.
After the the derby Zidane said the key elements of the defeat was the bad start: "We were 2-0 down in no time and then we were leaving too much space and it was harder." But he still has confidence for his players,"The players are not letting me down, we're just preparing for the new season and we have to remain calm. We have to be ready for when La Liga comes around."
"We're motivated and hungry to keep going," added the manager.
