China's trade with the U.S. fell in the first half of this year, but rose strongly with member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Because of that ASEAN replaced the U.S. to become China's second biggest trading partner. Song Qingrun, an associate professor at the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, shared his thoughts on China-ASEAN economic cooperation at a time of trade tensions and protectionism.
