Former Manchester United and France defender Patrice Evra has decided to hang his boots at the age of 38.

The former Red Devils captain, who has been without a club since last summer following a short-term deal with West Ham, has announced his retirement from professional football on Monday.

In an interview to the Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport, Evra said, “My playing career is officially over.” The news has been picked up and published by several media outlets across the globe.

He also spoke on his future plan of action in the interview and mentioned, “I started training for the UEFA B Coaching License in 2013, now I want to finish it and then go on to get the UEFA A license. In a year and a half, if everything goes well, I'll be ready to lead a team.”

The left-back, who played for AS Monaco until 2006, was a key part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s hugely successful United side from 2006 and played for the Premier League giants until 2014.

In his illustrious career with the prestigious club he won one Champions League crown, five Premier League titles and the League Cup on three occasions. The former Les Bleus captain also made 81 appearances for France.

After leaving the Manchester-based club, he relocated to Italy to join Juventus and played a pivotal role in helping the club win the Serie A and Coppa Italia double in both 2014-15 and 2015-16.

Evra subsequently moved on to Marseille in January 2017 and ended his spell with the French club in November that year after sparking a controversy by kicking one of the club’s fans before a Europa League match.

As a result of that untoward incident, he was banned from UEFA competition for the rest of the season although he was given a chance to play domestically. He returned to England two months later as he joined West Ham. But after making only five appearances for the club, he has called it a day from professional football.
