At least 52 inmates were killed in a prison riot in the city of Altamira in northern Brazilian state of Para due to a fight between rival gang factions on Monday, an official said.
Fighting broke out in the Altamira Regional Recovery Center at around 07:00 a.m. Prisoners belonging to the Comando Classe A (CCA) gang broke out of their wing and attacked another wing controlled by the Comando Vermelho (CV, Red Command), and set fire to a cell. Many of the victims died of smoke suffocation.
