The Pudong New Area released details of six tourism routes on Monday, with some destinations open to the public for the first time.

One is a journey to the very beginning of the development of the area to see how the skyscrapers now dominating the skyline were planned. Another explores the secrets of the cutting-edge technologies that are helping the city become China’s science and innovation center.

The reform and opening up route starts at 141 Pudong Avenue, site of the first office for Pudong developers in 1990. The route includes a visit to the Exhibition of Pudong New Area’s Development and Opening-up at the Pudong Exhibition Center and the cadre service center of Lujiazui Financial City on the 22nd floor of Shanghai Tower.

The scientific innovation route takes visitors on a tour of the future to witness how a car is manufactured by robots. The AI harbor in Zhangjiang will be open to the public for the first time.

Du Shaoxiong, Zhangjiang Group’s investment manager, said Zhangjiang will introduce interesting and inspiring stories about the development of Shanghai’s science and innovation.

“Shanghai is striving to become the hub of scientific innovation of China,” said Du. “Such a cause requires participation by all people.”

Pudong officials said that since many destinations on the two routes also serve other purposes, capacity is limited. So far, the two routes only accept group reservations.

Since it opened in 2018, the 22-kilometer waterfront on the east bank of Huangpu River has become a must-see spot for the tourists.

The riverfront path in Pudong is embellished by 22 pavilions named Wangjiang Yi, literally meaning “post house overlooking the Huangpu River.”

“Here you can attend a reading event with a cup of coffee or go to the gallery exhibition at Modern Art Museum Shanghai,” said Zou Shimin, two-time Olympic boxing champion and spokesman for the east bank route.

Last year, Zou opened the No.1 Sports Center at the east bank. Apart from boxing classes, Zou is designing more free fitness courses for the public.

The Oriental Pearl TV Tower, a Pudong landmark, features on a route described as a “tour of the city’s height.”

Visitors who are brave enough can take a walk on the balcony of the 88th floor of Jin Mao Tower, looking down from 340 meters above ground to get a bird’s eye view of the city.

The routes also offer an authentic rural experience. Visitors can go to Zhoupu Town to see the former dwelling of renowned translator Fu Lei in Zhoupu Town or taste local treats in Xinchang Town that can be found nowhere else.

For those looking for a family outing, the Disney Resort often comes to mind at first. But the district has more to offer. One attraction is the lavender park just a few minutes’ drive from the resort.

Last year, Pudong welcomed more than 56 million visitors, 10 percent more than in 2017.
