An efficient irrigation system designed by a local farmer is helping turn the semidesert area in Manas County of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region into a greenbelt by harvesting rainwater.

Local villager Chen Xingyun has been planting trees for years. Now he has designed an irrigation system that utilizes rainwater to irrigate these trees, covering 134 hectares. 

The system collects rainwater and water the trees and then channels the remaining water into a storage area.

It has greatly improved the trees' survival rate and reduced the cost of irrigation.
