Floating plastic garbage has swamped a remote Pacific island. Scientists say little can be done to save Henderson Island, once regarded as an environmental jewel, while a throwaway culture persists. Despite its extreme isolation, Henderson has one of the highest concentrations of plastic pollution on the planet because of ocean currents. Henderson Island was included on the UN World Heritage List in 1988.
