Clashes broke out between protesters and Hong Kong police outside the Kwai Chung Police Station on Tuesday night after police charged dozens of demonstrators with rioting. Protesters chanted slogans and threw plastic bottles, eggs, and umbrellas.
Protests took place after police announced that 44 out of the 49 people arrested in clashes on Sunday had been charged with rioting, a charge that carries up to 10 years in jail.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying urged the press to report on the protests in a balanced way. She said at a daily news briefing on Wednesday that violence and voicing opinions peacefully are two different things and media should not turn a blind eye to the violent acts of the protesters.
