Taiwan residents are celebrating the beginning of the Ghost Month. Celebratory activities include releasing lotus water lanterns at midnight as blessings to the dead. Ghost Month falls in the seventh month of the lunar calendar, when the gates of the hell are said to be open and spirits from the underworld are free to roam the Earth.
