'Clash of civilizations' and 'clash of management' are undesirable

American media reported on August 1 that Kiron Skinner, the U.S. State Department's director of policy planning, was "fired."

She is famous, or infamous, for her remarks posted on an American forum this April, saying that the U.S. was "preparing for a clash of civilizations" with China, and that the Cold War constituted "a fight within the Western family," while the coming conflict with China was "the first time that we will have a great power competitor that is not Caucasian."

Such openly advocating of U.S.-China "clash of civilizations" narratives soon left the world in shock.

What is equally shocking is the fact that the person who made such remarks is the U.S. State Department's top planner who helps to develop the country's foreign policy.

In addition, describing the Cold War as "a fight within the Western family" is already absurd and historically inaccurate, it is all the more unbelievable that the "racial superiority" rhetoric is actually uttered by an African-American woman who supposed to understand racism better than anyone else.

Her reckless remarks triggered widespread criticism across the global media. According to South China Morning Post, Skinner's words were blasted by U.S. critics who called them "awful". ABC news also revealed that some senior Australian government officials voiced their discontent with Skinner stating that her comments are "unhelpful".

Under vehement media attacks, Skinner had turned quiet since then, until August 1 when she was officially kicked out by the Trump administration.

American media reported that Skinner's dismissal had less to do with her "clash of civilizations" rhetoric than with her management style. She was kicked out mainly because of her "clash of management" with the staff as they chose not to bear with her anymore.

She has been reported to have acted unprofessionally in multiple ways, including yelling in public, airing homophobic comments and making groundless allegations as retaliation against disobedient employees.

One-third of Skinner's 20-odd member staff quit in the past year because they couldn't put up with her. More recently, another five threatened to leave if she wasn't ousted. Highly thought of by Mike Pompeo as she was, Skinner could no longer keep her position this time.

Contrast to the "clash of civilizations", China has been promoting the idea of building a community with a shared future for mankind and has made concrete efforts to put the words into actions. For example, the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has made significant contribution to the world economy. According to Xinhua ,World Bank and other international institutions indicated that the cooperation under the BRI will contribute at least 0.1 percent of global growth in 2019.

There are disputes and differences between the world's two largest economies, but they are not against each other. Escalating disputes would only worsen problems, not solve them.
