After President Donald Trump announced additional tariffs on 300 billion U.S. dollars worth of Chinese goods, four large American retail associations have voiced their objections. They say the move will hurt American consumers and jobs. The National Retail Federation, which counts Walmart and Amazon among its members, called Trump's decision a flawed strategy. White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow says the impact on consumers from the announced duties would be minimal, but retailer associations think otherwise. Shi Huimin, a research fellow with the National Academy of Development and Strategy, explains the reason why the Trump administration is still using tariffs as a weapon despite U.S. business leaders' opposition.
