China's national athletics trials started on Friday in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, and Xie Zhenye came from behind to overcome Su Bingtian in the men's 100 meters final with a time of 10.03 seconds to reach the Doha World Championships next month.

Xie Zhenye was in lane five and made the final after posting a fastest time in the heat of 10.09 seconds, while Su was qualified with 10.27 seconds.

Su started in lane four and began well, but Xie Zhenye soon turned the tables as the 25-year-old overtook him to win in 10.03 seconds, while the Guangdong sprinter clocked in at 10.19, followed by Xu Zhouzheng, who's just 0.01 shy off second.

Su competed in his first race after returning from a back injury which had sidelined him since the Shanghai Diamond League meet in May.

"It's always tough when I compete with Su. My strategy was to use my advantage, which is the second half of the race. I am confident to surpass them if they cannot take a good first half lead," Xie Zhenye said.

Su, who took the lead at first, thought he still needed time to adjust after not competing for a while: "The first half of the race was fine, but I was unable to keep my lead when Xie Zhenye caught up with me. I think a long time without competition won't affect me much, but I do need more races."

In the men's 110 meters hurdles final, Shanghai's Xie Wenjun, who won this event by a photo finish over Wilhem Belocian of France at the Diamond League in London last month, is in lane 4. While Xie Wenjun's strongest opponent, Zeng Jianhang is in lane 3.

Zeng made a personal best 13.45 seconds in Chongqing in June and began well to lead after the first-five hurdles.

Xie Wenjun came from behind to win the final with a time of 13.43 seconds, 0.11 faster than Zeng. Pan Zijie finished third with 13.77 seconds.

Meanwhile in the javelin, Asian champion Lyu Huihui broke her own continental record for the second time in less than a month after throwing 67.98 meters in her second attempt, which she said she was not surprised.

"I had this good feeling (that I was going to break the record) while I was warming up and I did it!" said Lyu.
