Iranian media says its Revolutionary Guards Corps has seized a foreign oil tanker in the Gulf that was smuggling fuel to some Arab states. It adds that seven sailors on board the tanker have been detained. Officials say the ship carried 700,000 liters of fuel. Last month, Iran seized a British tanker in the Strait of Hormuz for alleged marine violations and allowed a second one to proceed after issuing a warning. Tensions have spiked between Iran and the West, after British forces captured an Iranian oil tanker near Gibraltar that was accused of violating sanctions on Syria. Dr. Seyed Mohammad Marandi, a dean at the University of Tehran, says it is routine for Iran to tackle oil smuggling.
