Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday sent a message of condolence to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi over the terrorist attack in the Egyptian capital Cairo that left 20 people dead.

In his message, President Xi offered his deepest condolences to all the victims on behalf of the Chinese government and the Chinese people. He also expressed his most sincere sympathies to the families of those who died in the tragedy.

President Xi said that China firmly opposes terrorism and strongly condemns the attack.

Xi added that China supports the efforts made by the Egyptian government and people to combat terrorism and safeguard national stability and public safety.

A huge explosion reportedly caused by a multi-vehicle crash struck central Cairo earlier Sunday, leaving up to 20 people dead and 47 others injured, according to Xinhua.

A statement released by the Egyptian Interior Ministry revealed that the car causing the blast has been found containing explosives, and it was meant "to be used in a terrorist operation."
