A charity dance performance was staged at the Shanghai International Dance Center on Wednesday to pay tribute to the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

The performance showcased traditional Chinese elements including martial arts, opera and cultural allusions.

The performances captivated the audience with elaborate choreography, among which "Bright Red Star," a decade-old masterpiece featuring the courage and fighting spirit of revolutionary soldiers, was re-interpreted as a folk music version.

Huang Doudou, one of the most accomplished Chinese classical dancers, was the choreographer of the charity dance performance. During the past three weeks, he had been training 30 dancers selected from auditions held across China. These volunteer dancers came from all walks of life to join the performance, and the youngest of them was only 12 years old.

"The performance wouldn't have been a success without volunteers striving for their best and support from society. We are dancing for Chinese culture as well as for the volunteer spirit," Huang said.
