First Bend of the Yellow River is located on the Maqu Grassland in the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, northwest China's Gansu Province. It gets its name for being the first of several bends in the famous river.

The river winds like a serpentine belt, providing a suitable environment for the abundant wildlife in the area. Thus, the Maqu Wetland is often referred to as the "kidney of the Yellow River."
