News of a bizarre finish at a qualifying event for the 2020 Summer Olympics. Two-time world champion Flora Duffy of Bermuda emerged as the winner after British rivals Jess Learmonth and Georgia Taylor-Brown were disqualified for intentionally finishing in a tie.

This test of the course at the Odaiba Marine Park started very well for Learmonth, who won the opening swim leg and was the first to grab a bike. But Duffy, who's competing for the first time in more than a year due to a lingering foot injury, caught up and took the lead in the cycling section of the race. The closing run was shortened from 10 kilometers to five due to air quality issues, and that's where Learmonth and Taylor-Brown managed to push past Duffy for the lead.

The two Brits then crossed the finish line hand-in-hand, but the training partners were judged to have violated ITU rules by making no effort to separate themselves.

Duffy was therefore promoted from the third to first place with a time of 1 hour, 40 minutes and 19 seconds, while Alice Betto of Italy and Great Britain's Olympic bronze medalist Vicky Holland completed the podium on a strange day at Tokyo Bay.
