Hoh Xil is located in the northeastern extremity of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the largest and highest plateau in the world. It covers 83,000 square kilometers at an average elevation of 4,800 meters above sea level, where sub-zero average temperatures prevail all year-round.

The site's geographical and climatic conditions have nurtured a unique biodiversity. In the Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve, the snow-capped mountains, grasslands, clear lakes with reflections of white clouds, and flocks of wild animals form the breathtaking scenery.

A vast number of wild yaks, Tibetan antelopes, white-lipped deer and brown bears, which are native to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, live here.

In Mongolian, "Hoh Xil" means the "the beautiful girl," which needs everyone’s effort to preserve its beauty.
