Head coach Doc Rivers and his Los Angeles Clippers will have new member, former Cavaliers coach Ty Lue, according to a report in The Athletic on Tuesday.

Lue and Rivers have known and worked with each other for a long time. Rivers was Lue's coach on the Orlando Magic in 2003. Then from 2011 to 2014, Lue worked with Rivers on the Boston Celtics and the Clippers before he went to Cleveland to become the highest-paid assistant coach in NBA history.

In January 2016, Lue replaced David Blatt as the new head coach of the Cavaliers and helped the team win their first NBA Championship in franchise history. In the following two years, though Lue and the Cavaliers continued to make it to the Finals, they were defeated twice in a row by the Golden State Warriors. Last summer, LeBron James left to join the Los Angeles Lakers and Lue lost his job after a six-straight-loss start to the 2018-19 season.

Earlier this summer, Lue came close becoming the new head coach of the Lakers – which would have reunited him with LeBron, but negotiations broke down in the end. Fortunately, it did not take him too long to get a new job in LA, with the Clippers though.

Many see the addition of Lue as a good move for the Clippers' coaching staff.  So far in this summer, the Clippers have already made more moves than the Lakers, especially after signing Paul George and Kawhi Leonard.

Lue's coaching ability has remained a mystery. On one hand, Cleveland won their first championship with him; on the other hand, it's hard to say how much he contributed to that success because James and Kyrie Irving were the true decisive factors. Moreover, it doesn't help that Lue was fired shortly after James left.
