China refuted the irresponsible comments made by U.S. politicians concerning the Hong Kong issue, saying their attempt to sour China's relationship with others is "unacceptable," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said Friday.

The remarks come after U.S. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell published a signed article Tuesday, claiming that the violence in Hong Kong is a result of repression from the central government, calling on other countries to set a line between China and the free and fair international system.

Geng said that the remarks are whitewashing violent crimes as a struggle for human rights and freedom, and deliberately misinterpreting the work of Hong Kong police as violent repression when the police were only enforcing the law, fighting crimes and upholding social order.

"You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time," said Geng, quoting the words of former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln.

"I hope the U.S. could follow President Lincoln's advice and stop distorting the truth and take people of the whole world as fools," Geng added.

Hong Kong is an integral part of China, and Hong Kong affairs are China's internal affairs, Geng stressed, urging the U.S. to stop interfering and distorting the facts.
