Taiga, also known as boreal forest, is named after Boreas, the god of the north wind in Greek mythology. Only found in the Northern Hemisphere at high latitudes, taiga trees can withstand nature's worst, becoming the guardians of frigid lands.

In China, taiga is only found in the Great Khingan region in the northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the Altai Mountains in the northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Taiga in the Kanas valley in Xinjiang is a well-preserved place for numerous wildlife species.
