Bayern Munich of Bundesliga and Lille of Ligue 1 confirmed on Saturday that 22-year-old Portuguese midfielder Renato Sanches moved from the German club to his new French destination for 20 million euros (about 22.5 million U.S. dollars).

Having finished the biggest transfer in their history, Lille also extended Sanches contract, so the club can keep him until 2023.

"Renato Sanches asked us for a transfer because he wanted to join a club where he would see regular game time. Unfortunately, we could not guarantee him that at Bayern. Match practice is also important to him because he wants to claim his place in the Portuguese national team for EURO 2020. I would like to thank Renato for his achievements and wish him all the best for his future on behalf of FC Bayern," said Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, CEO of Bayern Munich.

On May 10, 2016, Bayern Munich paid 35 million euros (about 39.3 million U.S. dollars) to land Sanches from Benfica and that deal could be worth 80 million euros (about 89.9 million U.S. dollars) if certain conditions are met. One month later, Sanches attended the 2016 UEFA European Championship in France, scoring one goal for Portugal in the quarter-finals against Poland before winning the title of the tournament. His excellent performance made Bayern feel that Sanches may be their guy for the next decade.

However, the youngster had nothing but disappointment in Germany. Sanches only played 53 games and scored two goals for Bayern in three years, not to mention that he was sent to Swansea City of the Premier League on loan in the 2017-18 season. In Bayern's new season opener against Hertha BSC on August 16, Sanches was only sent to the field at the 85th minute. He was not happy about it and thus complained about manager Niko Kovac decison, ending him a 10,000 euros (about 11,240 U.S. dollars) fine.
