Fans of Bundesliga's Bayern Munich had an extra reason to be happy after the club's 3-0 victory over Schalke 04 at the Arena AufSchalke on Saturday night. Bayern's Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, who by the way claimed a hat-trick in the game, agreed to sign a contract extension with the club, according to Bild.

No details have been given about the new deal but it's only logical to assume that Bayern gave him a pay raise. Since Lewandowski joined the Bavarians in 2014, he has carried on as the best scorer of the Bundesliga. In the four straight seasons between 2015 and 2019, he had over 40 goals under his name, helping Bayern win five Bundesliga championships in a row plus two DFB-Pokal titles and three DFL-Supercup trophies.

There's no doubt that Bayern wants to keep the Polish striker but Lewandowski himself had some doubts about whether he should stay after the club failed to make the UEFA Champions League final for five consecutive seasons. Moreover, the club's failure to land decent improvements on the transfer market further deepened his hesitation.

Fortunately, Bayern deal with La Liga's Barcelona to introduce Philippe Coutinho on loan convinced Lewandowski to stay. Though the 27-year-old Brazilian midfielder had a disappointing 2018-19 season at Camp Nou, it does not mean he's not a good player. On the contrary, his creativity, vision and long shot ability are exactly what Bayern need.

Having said goodbye to Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben this summer, Bayern have been looking for new engines for the team's offense and trying to improve their unsteady defense. They bought Lucas Hernández and Benjamin Pavard, two center backs from Atlético Madrid and VfB Stuttgart respectively. In the winger position, the Bavarians landed Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan and added Michaël Cuisance from Borussia Mönchengladbach to the central field. The arrival of Coutinho was like a cardiac stimulant to the team but Bayern must have a further plan for the transfer market. The German club are expected to reach out to Manchester City again when Leroy Sane comes back from injury.
