China has finished this year's week-long WorldSkills Competition in Kazan, Russia with a record performance of 16 gold medals, 14 silver, five bronze and 17 excellence awards, ranking first place in the overall team score and the medal tallies.

The result was announced at the closing ceremony on Tuesday night local time.

The host Russia took the second place with 14 gold, four silver, four bronze and 25 excellence awards, trailed by South Korea with seven gold, six silver, two bronze and 26 excellence awards.

China first competed in the competition in 2011, and five tournaments later China has accumulated 36 gold medals, 29 silver, 20 bronze and 58 excellence awards.

The biennial event is known as the "Olympics of Skills", which represents the world's advanced level of vocational skills and provides an important platform for members to display and exchange vocational skills.

This year 1,355 contestants from 69 countries and regions have competed in 56 skill groups.

Shanghai, as the host of the 46th WorldSkills Competition in 2021, unveiled its mascots and theme on Monday.

The two mascots – a boy named Neng Neng and a girl named Qiao Qiao – represent skillful craftsmen and women. With the theme of "Master Skills, Change the World," Shanghai will hold the event in the city's National Exhibition and Convention Center.

"Welcome friends from five continents to China to participate in the grand event of WorldSkills Competition," said Zhang Jinan, minister of Human Resources and Social Security.
