Over 40 protests within two months, the ongoing protests and violence in Hong Kong are not spontaneous events. Speaking of the protests, former Hong Kong Law Society President Ho Kwan-yiu said they're all connected, and as facts show, are well organized.

"If someone told you they were all spontaneous events, would you believe them?" Ho said during an interview with Global Times.

Protesters are using social networks as platforms to coordinate events.

Telegram became the seventh most downloaded instant messaging app in Hong Kong when it gained around 110,000 new users in July. Protesters have flocked to the app to keep in touch with other demonstrators in the city.

And usage of LIHKG – a message board that operates like Reddit – surged tenfold from the year before.

Data from non-profit organization the Counter Extremism Project shows that Telegram is favored by terror groups like ISIL. The group has made use of Telegram's encrypted messaging feature to recruit new members, raise funds and even to organize extremist activities.

According to an anonymous document obtained by Global Times, rioters in Hong Kong used over 40 pages to lay out detailed counter-police strategies, including how to use chemical liquids when clashing with police.

In a behind-the-scenes organizational meeting by a group of demonstrators reported by New York Times, one of them described their protests as a "video game in real life."

However, clear methods of organization and inspiration from video games are not the only telling signs. Ho said the protests couldn't have happened without planning from the top down.

"More than 40 large-scale demonstrations within about 60 days, without a general commander it would not have happened," said Ho.

The legislator believes the violence to be jointly plotted by anti-government and external forces. Disruptions in Hong Kong still have no clear end in sight.
