China's first live sports matches shown in 5G+8K+5.1 surround sound were successfully broadcast at Beijing Sport University (BSU) on August 27-28.

The event was organized by university-owned media outlet BSU Sports, along with a dozen high-tech companies from home and abroad, under the supervision of the Beijing Municipal Radio and Television Bureau.

The state-of-the-art video playing technology featured games from the 2019 "Silk Road" International Women's Hockey League tournament at BSU.

On the huge 8K LED screen, the details were extremely clear and the surround sound made audience members feel as if they were inside the venue.

Over 500 invitees experienced the high speed, low delay of 5G, as well as high resolution and true reduction of 8K during the event, and gave their feedback to help the technology's developers know more about the customers' experience.

It is China's first time broadcasting a 5G+8K live match from start to finish – from the signal's acquisition, transmission and output to the audience's viewing.

As the technology is still in its earliest stages, the possible applications of 5G+8K remain for the public to imagine. But currently, it's scheduled to be used during the broadcasting of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games.
