China's top-ranked Wang Qiang beats Belgium's Alison Van Uytvanck to make the last 32 of the US Open women's singles while Zhang Shuai will meet Johanna Konta in the third round. 

Wang, seeded 18th in the Grand Slam event, met with some challenges in the opening set but still claimed the victory 7-5, 6-4 in one hour and 39 minutes. 

Both players struck 19 winners in the match, but Wang had just 23 unforced errors to the 37 from her opponent, who is ranked 68th in the world. 

Wang's reward will be a third-round clash against Fiona Ferro from France. 

Zhang Shuai beat her opponent Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia 6-7, 6-4, 3-6. 

Meanwhile, Chinese veteran player Peng Shuai lost to Maria Sakkari of Greece in three sets, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2. 

Thirty-three-year-old Peng will team up with Poland's Alicja Rosolska to play the women's doubles event at the US Open. 

"I will try my best to raise up my rankings in doubles event, and hopefully I can make the doubles event in next year's Tokyo Olympics," she said.

Meanwhile, 23-year-old American Taylor Townsend has pulled off the biggest victory of her career by beating former No. 1 and two-time major champion Simona Halep.

Two-time US Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki continued her campaign for a second major title, and top-ranked defending champion Naomi Osaka has breezed into the third round.

On the men’s side, World No. 2 Rafael Nadal advanced when Thanasi Kokkinakis withdrew with a right shoulder injury.
