Hong Kong police have shown restraint in dealing with protesters compared with French police, a scholar from Paris told CGTN, calling for young people to stop violence and to think of their future.

"We can see that the French government is resolute in dealing with the violent acts of the 'yellow vest' movement, but the Hong Kong police have maintained restraint and calmness until now," said Pierre Picquart, academia specialized in Chinese studies from Paris-VIII University.

Speaking of young people's involvement in violence, Picquart called on these young people to reflect on their behavior. "If you really care about your future and the future of Hong Kong, you should stop being violent and listening to lies made by external forces," he said.

Violence can only destroy these young people's family, employment, and wealth, he added.

Picquart said that external forces had been trying to instigate instability in the Asian financial hub.

What is happening in Hong Kong is absolutely a very organized action with external intervention, he said.

"Let's not forget that both Hong Kong and Macao are Special Administrative Regions that have returned to China, with a turbulent history ... Today, there are both internal and external attempts of separatism, at least to stir up trouble and chaos," he said.

Tranquility is what the city needs for now for further development, he said.
