One of the most eye-catching characteristics of the fagus lucida is its intertwined branches and weblike root system. China has seven out of 14 species in fagus genus across the world. Photos below show the perfect integration of a fagus lucida with a zigzag track in Tianping Mountain in Zhangjiajie City in China's Hunan Province.

Fagus lucida can mostly be found in central and southern China. Given its wood serves as a kind of fine material for furniture making, overlogging has caused the sharp decline of the tree.
