Hong Kong police ban Saturday's rally over safety concern

These violent demonstrations are highly dangerous, and could harm public safety, the police said during a press briefing Friday, adding that safety is the top priority for them to maintain the safety of Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong police has always supported the locals' freedom to conduct public meetings and processions, the police stressed, pointing out that over 90 percent of the assembly applications is passed every year.

Yet on behalf of public safety, we have to make the responsible decision, Regional Police Commander of Hong Kong Kwok Pak-chung said.

The police showed a slew of deadly weapons protesters have used in the past two months at the briefing, including petrol bomb, corrosive liquids, flammable gases, arrows, among others.

"These weapons can cause severe casualties," the police said.

Anyone who participates the Saturday rally is violating the law, the police said, urging residents to think twice before their action as the demonstration is already banned due to safety concerns.
