Japanese architect meets the art and science of Beijing's hutongs

Hutongs and siheyuan courtyards have been a feature of Beijing for around 800 years. Japanese architect Shuhei Aoyama loves the hutongs and has been living in one for the past decade. He sees hutongs as a shared space, making the residents' "homes" bigger than their houses. He also appreciates the combination of art and science in the historic architecture.
