Hou Kong Middle School, established in 1932, was the first to raise a national flag in Macao on October 1, 1949. The then principal Du Nam led all teachers and students in the school to raise the Five-Starred Red Flag. At that time, raising the flag was challenging, because Macao had not returned to the motherland. After that, the school would raise the national flag on every National Day and it has insisted for 70 years.
