Hutongs are narrow lanes lined by siheyuan courtyard residences. As a unique part of Beijing's culture, they stand as witnesses to the history of the city, and China, too. Is maintaining them as historical relics the only way to preserve the hutongs? Can they be restored to meet modern needs, and if so, how? Japanese architect Shuhei Aoyama will share his insights.
