This episode of "Ancient Charm of China" explores one of the most beautiful old towns in southwest China's Sichuan Province. Located in Hongya County, Meishan City, Liujiang Ancient Town offers a quiet getaway and an opportunity to experience 800 years of Chinese history.

Built in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), Liujiang was once dominated by some well-off families. There were four well-known clans, namely Zeng, Zhang, Yang, and He. Today Zeng's Mansion is the most intact residence, resisting the test of time.

Aside from the old Chinese-style houses, the old town is also known for its picturesque scenery. The drifting Huaxi River, green Yuping Mountains, and streams running through the town create a gorgeous landscape picture. It takes you away from all the buzz related to shopping and industrialization with its simplicity and authenticity.

There are quite a few wonderful places to relax and immerse in the rustic atmosphere. You can take a boat ride on the river, enjoy a cup of tea at the local tea house while chatting with friends or locals, or simply take a stroll along the winding cobbled streets and listen to the old town's story.

The old town of Liujiang also houses a giant statue of the sleeping Guanyin Bodhisattva, time-honored temples, and towering around 1,000-year-old trees also never fail to impress tourists.

When the night falls, the old town turns into a bustling night market. Bingfen, a crystal-clear jello mixed with ice, molasses and a variety of toppings are highly recommended. The refreshing, smooth, and sweet taste makes it a perfect summer snack.
