Provinces in east China are expecting more rainstorms and huge waves, as Typhoon Lingling climbs northbound along the coast. The storm gained steam and became a super typhoon on Thursday. Shanghai issued an alert on Friday morning, warning that the city will also see strong winds, thunder and lightning. Other coastal provinces including Zhejiang have upgraded their emergency response and asked fishing boats to return to harbor. Also affected by Lingling are some northeast provinces, in particular Jilin, which will see a heavy downpour over the next several days. The local meteorological department has issued alerts for extreme weather, such as thunderstorms and hail.
