U.S. stocks close higher amid trade hopes, data

U.S. stocks closed higher on Thursday as investors' sentiment was lifted by the news that China and the United States agreed to jointly create favorable conditions for trade talks in October.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 372.68 points, or 1.41 percent, to 26,728.15. The S&P 500 rose 38.22 points, or 1.30 percent, to 2,976.00. The Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 139.95 points, or 1.75 percent, to 8,116.83.

Eight of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors traded higher, with technology and financial sectors adding 2.13 percent and 1.9 percent respectively, leading the gainers.

The majority of the Dow component companies traded in green territory, with IBM, Caterpillar, and Goldman Sachs being the top gainers.

Chinese and U.S. chief trade negotiators agreed on Thursday to jointly take concrete actions to create favorable conditions for further consultations in October.

The agreement was reached in a phone conversation Chinese Vice Premier Liu He, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chief of the Chinese side of the China-U.S. comprehensive economic dialogue, held upon invitation with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

The two sides agreed to hold the 13th round of China-U.S. high-level economic and trade consultations in early October in Washington and maintain close communication before that.

On the economic front, private sector employment in the U.S. increased by 195,000 jobs from July to August, representing a rebound, according to ADP National Employment Report released on Thursday.
