Beijing on Monday urged the U.S. side to give up the wrong practice of maximum pressure on Iran, calling for restraint and continuous efforts to maintain and implement the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

"We think that the U.S. maximum pressure policy is the root cause of the Iran nuclear tension. They should abandon their mistakes of multilateral sanctions and maximum pressure," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said at a daily press briefing.

On Saturday, Iran officially announced a move to withdraw from part of its commitments to the JCPOA, reacting to U.S. President Donald Trump's step in May 2018 which pulled Washington out of the Iranian deal and re-imposed sanctions on Iran.

Hua urged relevant sides to keep the bpicture in mind, consider the long-term perspective and support solving problems through dialogue under the Iran nuclear deal joint commission.

"We hope relevant parties will meet each other halfway and work together for the alleviation of the Iranian nuclear issue together," the spokesperson stressed, adding that China is willing to work with all sides on this.
