Japanese film "Weathering With You" set for Chinese mainland screening

A Japanese animated romantic fantasy film "Weathering With You" by Makoto Shinkai, is set to hit Chinese mainland theaters on a date yet to be announced, according to the film's official Weibo account.

Set in Japan during a period of exceptionally rainy weather, it tells of a high school teenager who ran away to Tokyo and befriended an orphan girl who has the power to control the weather.

The movie  sparked a massive interest among Japanese movie watchers. The film has continued to top the box office in Japan for three weeks.

So far, it has done the business of more than 10 billion Japanese yen at the Japanese box office, overtaking Hollywood blockbusters such as the "Avengers 4" and the "Lion King" to become the runner-up at the 2019 Japanese box office.

Born in 1973, Makoto Shinkai is famous for directing the movie "Your Name," a high-grossing animated film released in 2016, which grossed 575 million yuan at the box office in Chinese mainland.

A Chinese version of the movie's poster was recently released. The film was released in Japan in July 2019.
