China's foreign ministry has lodged stern representations with Germany over a meeting between the German foreign minister and a Hong Kong activist, a spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Hua Chunying, a spokesperson from the ministry, reacted while answering a question about Monday's meeting between German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong Chi-fung.

Hua has reiterated that Hong Kong affairs are purely China's internal matter. Any foreign government, organization or individual is not allowed to interfere in Hong Kong affairs, she added.

"Any plots to rely on foreigners to build oneself up or acts or words to split the country are doomed to failure."

During her trip last week, German Chancellor Angela Merkel clearly said that she opposes violence and supports "One Country, Two Systems," the spokesperson said, urging the German side to keep its promise and avoid sending the wrong signals to the separatist force in Hong Kong.
