At least 31 Shiite pilgrims died and some 100 others were injured on Tuesday in a stampede in the holy city of Karbala in central Iraq. Iraq's Health Ministry says at least 10 people are in critical condition and the death toll could rise. The incident took place in the afternoon during the major Shiite ritual of Ashura as thousands of pilgrims were entering the Imam Hussein shrine. The annual pilgrimage marks the death of the Prophet Muhammed's grandson Hussein in battle in 680. It draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to Karbala from around the world.
