It has been proven that the "One Country, Two Systems" principle is totally feasible and enjoys broad public support, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Wednesday. 

Xi made the remarks during a meeting with Ho Iat Seng, who will take office as the fifth-term chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) on December 20.  

Noting that this year marks the 20th anniversary of Macao's return to China, Xi hailed the successful practice of the "One Country, Two Systems" principle with characteristics of Macao. 

Led by Chief Executives Edmund Ho Hau Wah and Chui Sai On, the Macao SAR government has united people from all social sectors in promoting rapid economic growth, continuous improvement in people's well-being as well as social stability and harmony, Xi said.   

He praised the SAR government for its "comprehensive and accurate understanding and implementation" of the "One Country, Two Systems" principle and efforts to safeguard the authority of China's Constitution and the Macao SAR Basic Law, adding that the SAR government has been firm in promoting the core values of loving the motherland and loving Macao. 

The president encouraged Ho Iat Seng to "see the big picture" and accurately grasp the situation in Macao and the need for the national development strategy, as well as to unite and lead the new SAR government and people from all social sectors in planning Macao's long-term development and achieving greater success under the "One Country, Two Systems" principle. 

Ho vowed to unwaveringly implement the "One Country, Two Systems" principle, safeguard the authority of China's Constitution and Macao SAR Basic Law, and uphold the central government's overall authority, the nation's sovereignty, security and development interests. 

Ho was elected Macao's chief executive-designate on August 25 and officially appointed by China's central government on September 4. He was granted the certificate of appointment by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in Beijing earlier on Wednesday.
