The relocation of Jiaotong University from Shanghai to the city of Xi'an is a great accomplishment in Chinese history. In the 1950s, to promote the development of the western region, the State Council decided to move most of the majors in Shanghai Jiaotong University to Xi'an, leading to the establishment of Xi'an Jiaotong University.

Huang Shangheng is one of the people who made the move. In 1958, he came to Xi'an City at the age of 10. His father, Huang Xichun, was a professor in the university's radio engineering department. The new school began without facilities or laboratories.

But the staff in Jiaotong University didn't complain about the arduous work condition. They managed to transport textbooks from Shanghai and built a bamboo auditorium for meetings. That generation overcame many difficulties and finally completed the construction of the school.

In 1978, Huang Shangheng was admitted to the university's engineering mechanics department and stayed there as a professor after graduation. He has been teaching for decades and is popular with students for his excellent teaching. He thinks the spirit of his father influenced him. Like his father, he is well known for his conscientious attitude towards teaching and care for students.

Over the years, two generations of Jiaotong University employees have cultivated numerous researchers and made remarkable contributions to higher education in China. Thanks to their efforts, Xi'an Jiaotong University has become a major university in the country and became one of the first universities in the national "Project 211" and "Project 985."

Huang Shangheng is 70 and has retired now. After dinner, he likes to wander around the school where every corner carries the memory of the people who participated in the construction. His son, Huang Haoxiang, was admitted to Xi'an Jiaotong University and also works at the university. In addition to high-quality education, he inherited the affection for this school from his elders.

Huang Haoxiang is a shutterbug. He likes to capture memories with his camera. Jiaotong University is more of a spiritual support for them. The university is their home.

"My family shares a deep love for this century-old school and we have spent the best of our lives here. I wish I could follow in my grandpa and father's footsteps."
