As the giant panda of the plant kingdom, the Chinese yew has lived for 2.5 million years. In east China's Jiangxi Province, Tonggu County is known as "home of Chinese yew," where over 800,000 Chinese yews lived. 

Nowadays, there are 11 species under the genus Taxus, and five of them can be found in China. The tree grows very slowly, usually taking 100 to 250 years for a sprout to grow into a tree. Due to its poor regeneration capacity, a virgin forest consisting of Chinese yew is rarely seen.

The precious plant is best known for the Paclitaxel that exists in its roots, leaves and fruit, which has anti-cancer effects. However, its seed and red aril are toxic, and may even cause sudden death. The tree is now under first-class state protection in China.
