China has achieved great progress in green commuting, now serving 300 million trips each day, a senior transport official said at the opening ceremony of a green commuting campaign on Monday.

The campaign, organized by China's Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Public Security, National Government Offices Administration and All-China Federation of Trade Unions, will last from Sept. 16 to 22.

A total of 37 cities in China have opened rail transit systems, with a total operating distance of more than 5,300 km. The urban public transport system serves over 90 billion passenger trips annually, and the average daily users of shared bicycles exceeds 40 million, said Liu Xiaoming, vice minister of transport, at the campaign's launching ceremony.

So far, there are 340,000 new energy vehicles (NEV) out of the 670,000 buses and trolleybuses now operating in the country, ranking first in the world, Liu said.
