More than 23 million Huawei smartphone fans on Weibo got the company's preview of the new Mate 30 series on Tuesday. The company planned out five consecutive videos on social media to show off five new features, taunting that they are "borderline-impossible."

Before listing the new features, let's take a look at the leaked specs of the new smartphone series.

1. Side touch

Having covered up the entire front side with a touchscreen, the smartphone makers are eyeing the left and right sides of their gadgets.

Huawei is one of the first to introduce what it calls a "waterfall" screen with the Mate 30 series.

Waterfall screen is a development of Samsung's iconic curve screens, but with a much sharper angle. The screen turns almost 90 degree downward on the left and right edges, making the display content look like a waterfall.

Though the extra screen space is nearly useless when you look at the front side, this technology gives you touch control on the two sides of the phone and the physical buttons there – which usually control volume – can be removed.

Samsung has been creating edge-related features since the Galaxy Note 4 Edge but not many apps can utilize the curved edges. What difference can Huawei make with then?

2. Hover gestures

Back in 2007 when the first iPhone came out, multi-touch was magical. As the capacitive touchscreen widely spread, lazy people started to dream about a new kind of control that is even easier than touching, like, gesture control near the phone?

One of the new Huawei video hinted about hover control but didn't reveal how exactly it'll make a difference.

3. Faster wireless charging

Wireless charging has been around for a while but not everybody is buying the concept. Among the many complaints around this tech, a critical one is about speed, particularly about making it as fast as wired charging.

After the death of Apple's Airpower, new attempts in this category seem to have disappeared. As the wired charging speed slowly reaching 100 watts, what can Huawei do for people who love wireless charging?

4. Slower slow-mo shots

Slow-mo video can be interesting and useful for smartphone users. But current slow-mo functions are hard to control and people see them as "just for fun" features.

Current Huawei flagships like P30 are also packed with a 32x 960fps slow-mo function. So what can the Mate 30 do in addition to that?

Leaked info about the phone shows that the phone's brand-new Kirin 990 chip will help users shoot stunning 7,680 fps slow-mo videos. That means the video will be 256 times slower than normal. How can the Mate 30 record so many frames in such a short time?

5. 'Unbelievable' night mode

Huawei shocked the smartphone world by introducing an AI-based night mode that can basically turn a phone into night vision goggles.

Now the company is hinting at a better version of this feature. But again, nothing specific was said in the details.

After all, we still need to wait to see what the Huawei Mate 30 actually look like. We will cover the true specs of the smartphone series and try to find out who will most likely buy it.

The boss of Huawei's consumer business, Richard Yu, posted a vlog on his Weibo talking about the new phone.

He preferred to use "world-first" to "very very fast" when describing the Mate 30 series. Both of the choices are his frequently-used expressions during press releases.

Yu also described the Mate 30 series as "strong in performance, leader in design and 5G" and "an experience of the new era."

When asked "if a P30 Pro and a Mate 30 Pro both fell into water, which will you save first?" Yu chose the third answer "neither" because the two phones are water-resistant.
