Zhangye, located in Gansu Province of northwest China, is known for its grand and astonishing landscape. There are snow-capped mountains, forests, grasslands, valleys, the gobi desert and wetlands.

Danxia refers to red sand conglomerated by long-term weathering, stripping and water erosion, forming isolated peaks and steep rocks. The Danxia landform here in Zhangye developed during the pre-Jurassic to tertiary period about 200 million years ago.
