State Council Information Office (SCIO) on Friday held a press conference addressing the major achievements in energy development that China has made in the 70 years.

Zhang Jianhua, director of the National Energy Administration, concluded five progressive aspects of China's energy development, including the capacity of energy supply, energy consumption, energy technologies, energy structural reform, and international cooperation.

China has witnessed a great increase in the capacity of energy supply, from supply shortage to supply sufficient. The energy structure has been optimized in the 70 years, forming up a diverse supply system of coal, oil, gas, new energy, and renewable energy.

In 2018, China ranked the world's first regarding the installed capacity of coal-fired power, hydropower, wind power, and solar power, the third in terms of installed capacity of nuclear power. The proportion of installed capacity generated by clean energy has increased to about 40 percent.

China's energy consumption market has shifted to green energy consumption from mainly coal consumption. Given the endogenous resource of the country, coal has been a major energy supply, taking over 90 percent of the total energy consumption in the 1950s.

Now, the proportion of coal consumption historically fell below 60 percent; energy consumption per unit of GDP decreased by 23.3 percent; the proportion of non-fossil energy consumption increased to 14.3 percent, the proportion of natural gas consumption increased to 7.8 percent, and the proportion of electricity in terminal energy consumption increased to 25.5 percent.

Energy technologies have achieved a huge transformation from imitation to leadership, embarking on a new path of power conversion and innovation development.

In the past 70 years, China's energy system technology and equipment level have been continuously improved. The technical equipment for 10 million tons of comprehensive coal mining, tertiary oil recovery, and complex block oil and gas development has reached the world's leading level.

China has also built the world's largest clean coal power system and the power grid. Air pollutant emission index has leaped to the world's advanced level.

Speaking of structural energy reform, Zhang said there is a huge transformation from planning management to market-oriented. The country has carried out drastic reforms in energy production and operation, prices, investment and financing, foreign trade, and management systems.

In terms of international cooperation, China has been more open up. Over the past 70 years, the country has comprehensively developed energy exchanges and cooperation with countries all over the world, and made great efforts to promote the Belt and Road energy cooperation.

China has built five major international oil and gas cooperation zones and four major oil and gas import strategic channels, maintained close cooperation with the Energy Energy Charter, the International Energy Agency, the International Renewable Energy Agency and other international energy organizations.
