Stating that any plot against the HKSAR is doomed to fail, a spokesperson of the Office of the Commissioner of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on Monday said U.S. politicians recent "flagrant" attempts to flout China's authority in the HKSAR are proof positive of the U.S. being the "black hand" behind the Hong Kong situation.

The remarks were made in response to media reports of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senator Marco Rubio and Representative James McGovern have threatened to introduce the so-called "Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act."

The U.S politicians also reportedly met and invited the so-called "Hong Kong independence" activists Joshua Wong, Denise Ho and Sunny Cheung to testify at a Hong Kong-related hearing.

The commissioner's office expressed indignation and firm opposition to the actions of the U.S. politicians who have openly and flagrantly meddled with Hong Kong affairs, which are China's domestic affairs.

The situation of human rights and freedoms in Hong Kong cannot be easily smeared, said the spokesperson, adding that according to Canadian research organization the Fraser Institute's latest Human Freedom Index, the performance of Hong Kong, which ranks third in the world, is far better than that of the U.S., which ranks 17th.

The spokesperson said the Hong Kong police are also internationally acclaimed for their restrained and civilized enforcement of the law, while the U.S. keeps a notoriously poor record of human rights and freedoms.

"What right, we wonder, does the US have to allege that Hong Kong lacks human rights and freedoms? Non-intervention has been written in the UN Charter and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations," the spokesperson said. "Even as some U.S. congressmen accuse other countries of interfering in their internal affairs, they are openly colluding with racial separatists in other countries, pointing fingers at and arbitrarily meddling with others' internal affairs."

"Such a sheer application of double standard is simply despicable," the commissioner's office representative said.

Emphasizing that no one should ever underestimate the will and capability of the Chinese people, including Hong Kong compatriots, to defend the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong, the spokesperson said any plot to mess up the city is doomed to fail.

"Either American politicians who want to play Hong Kong as a card or separatists betraying their country for personal benefit will only shoot themselves in the foot," the representative said.
